Gangotri Dham Month-Wise Weather Conditions

Situated in the holy district of Uttarkashi in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand, Gangotri Dham is one of the most important pillars in the Chota Chardham Yatra. This holy hill town is situated on the banks of River Bhagirathi which is the origin of the holy River Ganga. Sitting comfortably at an elevation of 10,200 feet above sea level among the greater Himalayan range Gangotri Dham is one of the most pristine centres of pilgrimage for Hindu devotees and yatris. The gleaming white temple was originally built by a Nepalese general Amar Singh Thapa.

This dham marks the point where Goddess Ganga had descended from Lord Shiva’s locks of hair with great might and force. This seat of goddess Ganga is often visited after Yamunotri Dham which is located on the western region of the majestic Garhwal hills attracts numerous devotees and yatris each year during the open season. Being situated at such a great height the entire region experiences extremely cold and freezing climatic conditions throughout the year. When the snowfall commences during the winter months shutting down the pilgrimage yatra the presiding deity is then shifted to Mukhba where the pilgrims can continue their darshan to the lord.

Here is a detailed guide for the month wise weather conditions of Gangotri Dham:

January: The temperature during this month goes to a subzero level. The temperature dips till -12 degree Celsius. Snowfall is prevalent during this season and the entire region is deserted during this month.

February: The climatic conditions still remain extremely cold and freezing with the temperature dipping till -8 degree Celsius. The region still remains covered in stark white snow and any sort of activity is shut down.

March: The weather conditions start to clear a bit with the temperature ranging between -5 degree Celsius and 5 degree Celsius. The freezing climatic conditions and extremely cold weather conditions makes travel and tourism unfavourable.

April: The temperature conditions starts improving a little bit during this month where the temperature pans between -2 degree Celsius and 7 degree Celsius. however snowfall is also extremely prevalent during this time.

May: With the temperature panning between 2 degree Celsius and 10 degree Celsius this is one of the best times to visit Gangotri. This is also considered to be the oncoming of the summer season. The kapat of the main temple shrine opens for darshan during this season.

June: The temperature ranges from 5 degree Celsius to 15 degree Celsius which is considered to be the summer season in Gangotri. This is also one of the best times to visit Gangotri Dham. People can also go for outdoor sports activities or trekking and camping expedition during this time.

July: The temperature remains cold during this season accompanied by heavy rainfall where the temperature stays between 10 degree Celsius to 16 degree Celsius. pilgrimage and yatra activities are shut down for business during this time.

August: This month also sees extremely cold season along with heavy rainfall. The entire region remains prone to unpredictable mudslides, landslides and avalanches which prove to devastate the normal functioning.

September: With the temperature ranging between 5 degree Celsius to 14 degree Celsius this month is also rainy and remains extremely cold throughout. Pilgrims and devotees are expected to carry heavy woolen clothing and winter wear.

October: With the temperature panning between 1 degree Celsius to 12 degree Celsius the weather conditions take a severely cold turn. With the plunging temperature conditions and the weather increasing getting colder October witnesses extremely cold and chilling weather conditions.

November: The temperature during this cold winter month goes as low as -2 degree Celsius. Snowfall is a common phenomenon during this month and towards the end of the month the Dham Kapat closes for darshan.

December: This cold season witnesses the temperature which goes as low and as freezing as -8 degree Celsius. Yatra and other adventure activities gets shut down for the season and the presiding deity is shifted to the winter abode of Mukhba.
